“The State of Business Analytics in China” was presented by two professors from Tsinghua University, one of China’s top universities. Professor Chen Jian is the Lenovo Chair Professor in the Department of Management Science and Engineering, School of Economics and Management. Professor Jian has been awarded the title of Changjiang Scholar by the Ministry of Education of China, and has also received the National Science Foundation’s Top Scientist Award, among his prestigious honors. Professor Jian has authored and co-authored more than 170 articles in Chinese and international publications.

The other presenting professor was Dr. Caibo Wang from the Department of Industrial Engineering. He is also the Deputy Chair of the Department of Industrial Engineering and the Deputy Executive Director of the Quality and Reliability Institute of Tsinghua University. Professor Wang has published more than 30 articles in SCI-index journals.

Professor Yeh gave a presentation titled “The State of Business Analytics in the United States” about the educational outlook for analytics-related programs around the world. His expertise is in industrial statistics, particularly in statistical quality control for manufacturing and non-manufacturing applications. He is currently working on a unique project involving the development and application of statistical quality control methodologies for health care and health surveillance problems.

In addition to co-hosting the China Symposium, the College of Business also established an innovative “3 + 1” partnership with TPU, a faculty and student exchange. Last year, four TPU faculty sat in classrooms as “students” to learn how we teach statistics, operations research, and MIS, and then apply similar teaching methods to their classrooms. Over the summer, three faculty members went to TPU to teach courses in finance, statistics, and economics.

As part of the partnership, two cohorts of TPU students will arrive in 2017 to complete their dual undergraduate business degrees. They spent their first three years at TPU taking classes, some of which were taught by professors who went abroad this summer. During the fourth year of classes, TPU students will come to earn a degree in business analytics, and TPU will apply their credits to the field of management information systems.
